As a warning, I'm only in Level 2 of Japanese Language. I'm doing this partly to improve my Japanese, partly for fun, and partly because I want to help those who know even less than Japanese than I do. Meaning, there are mistakes, and there are some passages I didn't even try to translate. [If a line is marked with '***', it means I had difficulty with it.]

If you know I have something wrong, or understood something I didn't, instead of being snotty, tell me (pixbell@hotmail.com) so that I can learn. I appreciate all constructive critiscm.

Go ahead and share the translation with your friends. Be warned that this is a rough draft.

pg. 104

[A picture of Kazahaya draped over Rikuou. Both are wearing lots of jewelry. Rikuou is pointing his thumb downwards, and Kazahaya is giving the viewer the finger.]

pg. 105

Kazahaya: ...Are these insects?

pg. 106

[He looks around him]

Kazahaya: (...It can't be. There's nothing there.)

[He kneels to get a closer look at the shadows.]

Kazahaya: Then where are these shadows coming from?

pg. 107

[He gets back up, and starts walking. The shadows move along with him.]

Kazahaya: Are they following me?

Kazahaya: What *is* this?

pg. 108

[Back at the drugstore, Kakei is working, and Sagai has just woken up.]

Sagai [yawning]: You alone?

[Sagai ...smells? the back of Kakei's neck.]

Sagai: Where are the boys?
Kakei: Working-- on the side job.

Sagai: Making them do annoying jobs again?

pg. 109

Kakei: I thought he'd do it, so I asked him to.

*** Sagai: He might encounter some difficulties, though.

Kakei: He'll be fine. There's a full moon, so he'll be able to see the shadows clearly.

pg. 110

[Kazahaya is still running.]

Kazahaya: (They really *are* following me.)

pg. 111

Kazahaya: (Shadows. There's no physical form, but shadows are following around me.)

Kazahaya: (Are they spirits, or something? If they are, I won't be able to tell.)

Kazahaya: (That can't be it. If it were spirits, I wouldn't be able to see them at all.)

pg. 112

Kazahaya: (Which means that the shadows are really there.)

Kazahaya: (But what shadows are they?)

Kazahaya: (Whatever it is, I don't have time for it.)

pg. 113

[He keeps on walking, and looks back warily.]

Kazahaya: They're still following me.

*** Kazahaya: (There were times like this back home, too. Because we lived in an urban area, in the garden things like insects would follow us around.)

[Enlightenment dawns.]

Kazahaya: Insects...

pg. 114

Kazahaya: Maybe these are things are fireflies that can't be seen with eyes?!

[He reaches out in midair, and tries to grab them. He misses.]

Kazahaya: Huh?

pg. 115

[Kazahaya tries again and again, but keeps missing.]

Kazahaya: The should be here, above the shadows!

Kazahaya: But I can't catch anything! What's up with this?!

Kazahaya: I can't touch invisible places! You damned bugs!

pg. 116

[After exhausting himself by reaching into the air aimlessly, Kazahaya takes a pause. He's not angry anymore, but is very irritated.]

Kazahaya: It's no use. No matter how hard I try, I can't catch them.

Kazahaya: (I don't understand Kakei-san's stupid orders!)

Kazahaya: (And I don't get why he gave me this water, either.)

pg. 117

Kazahaya [swinging the water bottle]: After all that movement, I'm thirsty.

[More enlightenment dawns.]

Kazahaya: (Is this just a drink for when I get thirsty?! Just plain water?)

Kazahaya [opening the bottle]: He should have given me a net, or a cage!

[He drinks the water.]

pg. 118

[Kazahaya opens his eyes, and sees fireflies everywhere.]

pg. 119

Kazahaya: (This is the water's memory.)

pg. 120

*** Kazahaya: (The fireflies invisible to eyes were in water. They like in the pond.)

Kazahaya [smiling]: (They're fireflies visible only in water.)

Kazahaya: (Outside the water, they're visible only with the shadows made by bright moonlight.)

Kazahaya [peacefully touching the fireflies]: (They're so beautiful.)

Kazahaya: (I get it now. They were following me because I held the water they lived in.)

pg. 121

Kazahaya: (They wanted to return to the water.)

*** Kazahaya: (Which means that pettobotoru no mizu sae areba katte ni hotaru wa haittekureru.)

Kazahaya: (The bottle's water.... water... now that I think of water, I...)

pg. 123

[With shocking realization]

*** Kazahaya: I drank it!

[Having snapped out of his revery, Kazahaya realizes he's falling back-first into a pond. But he can't stop from falling in.]

Kazahaya: AAH!

pg. 124

[He drowns]

Kazahaya [hand reaching up]: I can't...! My breath...

[Kazahaya falls unconscious.]

pg. 125

[Rikuou dives in and saves Kazahaya.]

pg. 126

[Rikuou lays Kazahaya's unconscious body onto the bank. He looks fairly angry.]

Rikuou: Was this idiot drowning himself?

Rikuou: Like Tsukiko?

Rikuou: [looking up at the moon]: There's even a full moon out.

Rikuou: ...I'm remembering bad things.

pg. 127

[Back in the apartment, Kazahaya is in bed.]

Kazahaya [waking up]: Huh?

Kazahaya: Why am I back here?

Kakei: Because Rikuou saved you.

Kazahaya: What?!

*** Saiga: It's normal to pull a drowning guy onto shore.

Kazahaya [blushing]: But how did he know?

pg. 128

[walking out of the shower-- fully clothed]

Rikuou: Kakei-san told me to go.

Kazahaya: Why?!

Rikuou [laughing]: 'Cause it'd suck if you drowned, since you're the drugstore's customer magnet.

Kazahaya: (Wait a minute-- how did he know I was going to drown?)

*** Kakei: Well, then, shall take the fireflies from your stomach?

pg. 129

Kakei [to Sagai]: Turn off the lights.

Kakei: It's a good thing you didn't drink the whole thing, Kudou-kun.

Kakei: Open your moth.

[Kazahaya complies, and opens his mouth towards the open water-bottle.]

Kakei: I wonder if they went in?

[He holds the water bottle up to the moonlight; the water has fireflies in it.]

Kazahaya [smiling]: They're really beautiful.

Kakei: You succeeded in catching the fireflies.
Kazahaya [excitedly]: So my payment?

Kakei: You've earned it.

pg. 130

Kazahaya: All *right*!
Kakei: You'll have to split with Rikuou.

Kazahaya: Whaaaaaaaat?!

Sagai [patting the disappointed Kazahaya's head]: If Rikuou hadn't been there, you would have committed lover's suicide with the fireflies.

[Kazahaya looks over to Rikuou.]

pg. 131

[Rikuou smirks.]

[Rikuou smirks. Kazahaya, needless to say, is severly pissed off by him.]

*** Kazahaya: (Fuck! I'll show you, someday!)

Kakei: Kudou-kun, it's cold and you fell into a lake today. You should go sleep.
Kazahaya: Okay.....

[The last panel shows the shabby drug store and the full moon. How romantic.]
